Galileo Galilei Essay Example for Free
Galileo Galilei Essay Galileo Galilei is an Italian astronomer, physicist, philosopher, and mathematician. He ranks with Archimedes, Newton, and Einstein as one of the greatest scientists of all time. His discoveries, made with the crudest of equipment, were brilliant examples of scientific deduction. Galileoââ¬â¢s studies of natural laws laid the groundwork for the experimental scientists who followed him. Galileo was born at Pisa, the son of a musician who planned a medical career for him. He began studying medicine at the University of Pisa. According to legend, Galileo made his first major discovery at this time. He is said to have used his pulse to time the swinging of a suspended lamp in a cathedral; he found that, no matter how far the lamp swung, the timing has always the same (Drake, 2002). In later life Galileo established the fact that a free-swinging object, or pendulum, moves in uniform time intervals. Pendulum clocks are a common application of this principle. Thesis Statement: This paper scrutinizes the life and contributions of Galileo Galilei. II. Discussion Galileo constructed the first telescope used for astronomical observations; the observations he made supported Copernicusââ¬â¢ theory that the sun is the center of the solar system. In physics, Galileo discovered the principles of motion followed by swinging pendulums, falling bodies, and flying projectiles. Galileo used his heartbeat to time the period of a pendulum. He realized that a pendulum could be used as a standard of time for a clock (Rose 2004). Pendulum clocks are still sold today, more than three hundred years after their invention. Moreover, changing from the study of medicine to that mathematics and natural science, Galileo conducted experiments on gravity that brought him to public attention. In 1589, he became a lecturer on mathematics at the University of Pisa, and began his studies of falling bodies. According to legend, as mentioned earlier, he dropped objects from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to prove his theory that bodies fall at the same speed and with the same acceleration regardless of their weight and size. He also demonstrated that projectiles follow a parabolic path. These discoveries were contrary to the teachings of the ancient Greek scientist and philosopher Aristotle, many of whose ideas had for centuries been accepted without question. Galileo aroused such opposition that in 1951 he was forced to resign from the university (Rose 2004). The next year Galileo obtained a professorship in mathematics at the University of Padua, where he remained for 18 years. This was a period of successful research, acclaim, and prosperity for Galileo. In 1609, Galileo received news of the invention, in Flanders, of a device that made a distant objects appear larger. He immediately set out to build such a device for himself. The final result was a 32-power refracting telescope, with which he made series of major discoveries (Poupard 2005). He found by observation that the moon shone only from reflected light; that the Milky Way was formed of a multitude of stars; and that the planet Jupiter was circled by several moons. His discoveries caused great excitement among astronomers; he was besieged with orders for telescopes. In 1610, Galileo left Padua for Florence to become official mathematician and philosopher to Grand Duke Cosimo II deââ¬â¢ Medici. By the end of the year his telescopic discoveries included the rings of Saturn, the phases of Venus, and sun spots. His observations clearly confirmed the theory of the Polish astronomer Copernicus that the earth and planets revolved around the sun. The church, however, had accepted as conforming the Bible the earlier idea of the planets and sun revolving around the stationary earth. When Galileo visited Rome in 1611 he was given a welcome by Church officials befitting one of the greatest astronomers of all time, as he was then acknowledged to be. This gave him the courage to announce his support of the Copernican theory of the solar system. Controversy flared. Although warned by the Church to avoid religious interpretation of his theory, Galileo attempted to prove it by quoting the Bible. He was told by the Church in 1616 to abandon the Copernican theory because it contradicted the Bible. In 1632, however, he published Dialogue on the Two Chief Systems of the World, in which he revived his argument in favor of the Copernican system. Galileo was then summoned to appear before the Inquisition and forced to renounce the view that the earth moves around the sun (Poupard, 2005). Although sentenced to imprisonment, he was permitted to retire to his home, where he continued his studies. III. Conclusion As a conclusion, Galileo Galilei made great contributions to our society through his invention and discoveries. His works are highly acclaimed and made significant impact in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, and in sciences. Reference: Drake, Stillman (2003). E Business Integration Systems Of Alibaba
E Business Integration Systems Of Alibaba Alibaba.com is commonly quoted among the leading 5 websites in the world. Other 5 websites which are competing in the same race are Amazon, Yahoo, eBay as well as AOL, with the help of domestic as well as international media. Hence, in other words, www.alibaba.com is a top rated business-to-business (B2B) as well as business-to-consumer (B2C) website. The e-business integration system of this website, in general, needs such a tactic, which has a touching appeal in order to produce prompt action. Hence, principally for an expensive products or assistance, this website is required to offer superior depth of information to the customers (both buyers as well as suppliers) in order to assist them in their assessment of this business. This website is useful for both buyers as well as sellers. Hence, one can buy as well as sell products also. This website is basically an English-language website as English is the only language which can be understood by whole world. So, there is no geographical challenge for this website to seek attention of customers. It primarily serves small as well as Medium-Sized Enterprises or in short SME, in the worldwide trade community, and hence, around 1 million users have registered themselves to this site from more than 200 countries as well as territories. Over 300,000 visitors go through this site every s ingle day, among which maximum users are global buyers as well as importers who are looking for trading with traders in China as well as other foremost manufacturing nations all over the world. Hence, the primary customers for this website are Suppliers, Exporters, Manufacturers as well as Importers. Problem Statement As www.alibaba.com is a website on a broader perspective, millions and trillions of customers go through it and trade accordingly. Now, the main problems while designing this website which needs to be solved are following: The website must be user friendly, so that it should not be problem for a buyer or a seller to navigate the site and work accordingly. Not everyone is well versed with internet technology; hence, its really important to make a comfortable website with not very complicated language. but, on the same hand, the website should be attractive enough to appeal visitors to go through it. Secondly, its a normal tendency that customers usually like to inspect the merchandise before purchase; hence, they can assume that they are at advanced threat of fraud as they are not able to inspect the product and services physically. There is one more risk of making purchase with the help of stolen credit cards or any other counterfeit refutation of the online purchase. Hence, this website needs to be more reliable and secured from customers perspective. Third problem area is that Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption is a must to be used for secured transaction otherwise not a single buyer as well as supplier will want to use their credit card for this purpose. SSL is a technique which usually solves the difficulty of credit cards which, many times, got disconnected in delivery between the customer and the business. A lot of hackers are there to hack the transaction in between; hence, SSL should be compulsorily used in order to avoid Identity theft. Thus, computer security is really a major concern, now days, for both merchants as well as e-commerce service providers, who install countermeasures like, firewalls as well as anti-virus software, which is essential for protecting the network. Phishing is one more danger, where customers are fooled by thinking that they are trading with retailer of good reputation, while, they are actually manipulated to feed confidential information to such a system which is controlled by malicious parties. Hence, website needs to be secured enough to avoid the circumstances of Phishing. One more problem area is privacy. No one wants to share their personal and confidential information with third party or over unsecured network because of risk; hence, registration must be very confidential and secured. Even, a lot of consumers do not like spam and telemarketing also, which can lead to providing contact data to any online merchant. Objective This research intend to develop as well as design a website with inbuilt e-commerce techniques, such as, B-2-C (Business-to-Consumers) as well as B-2-B (Business-to-Business) features meant for efficient marketing approaches. Moreover, there are few more specific objectives while designing this site, as well. First is to build up such a system which must permit a process of monitoring in order to maintain database interactivity. Second objective is to create such a data-driven application where the contents of the web can be reorganized dynamically. Furthermore, last but not the least objective is to provide as well as improve all the product information and allocation for Alibaba.com. Summary Alibaba.com is one of the global leaders in the world of e-commerce for small scale business organizations as well as flagship corporations of Alibaba Group. This website offers internet as well as Web-related services to customers all over the world. The services provided by this website are selling different products to its customers. As this website is designed on the principle of Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Customer (B2C), both, buyers as well as suppliers are its customers. Based on the experience along with expertise in both business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales, this business organization believe that it can offer a unique as well as superior service to its customers across the whole world, in comparison to what is currently available. The development of this project is based on the phases of System development Life Cycle. All the problem areas have been identified and hence, a user-friendly website has been created. These phases of development will emphasize most of the aspects of this system and the business. Planning Planning is something which is very important for any organization to do as it will help in organizing things in a planned manner. We can be successful in what we are doing if proper planning is done. We need to understand the purpose of planning the things. This will help in going in the right path. There are many important things which have to be taken care when planning for a task. Planning a website is again the most important thing as it is used by the users of the organization. This is something which has to be taken care seriously. Proper planning will lead to the success of the company. It is always advisable to design a website with the help of experienced people. There are two main steps in planning for a task. Project intention: This is something which helps in understanding the importance of the project. The value of the project should be known properly. Our final intention of creating a website is to increase the revenue of the company. Website should be planned in such a way that it is user friendly. Users should be able to use the website and should get the required information from it. Website planning is an important task and should be taken seriously. Details about the company should be included. Search options should be very friendly. This will help in navigating properly across the site. We should design the website in such a way that customer can get all the information that they are looking out for. We should look into minimizing the work and should think of saving money. Website should be designed in such a way that customers are visited quite often and can be impressed with the websites information. This will increase the number of users and also helps in increasing the revenu e of the company. Project management: Project management is very important as it will help in understanding the requirements. We should be very careful when designing the website. We should a proper planning of how to create the website. Care should be taken that the size of the website should be enough to get into it as it may slow down which will in turn increase customers frustration. Designed website should be virus free which will increase customers visit and also will ensure that the website is safe enough to use. There are many other things which also have to be taken care and are the color, design and the font size. Color used to design the website should be light and should not involve many colors. On the other side we should also make it look attractive. Font size should be normal so that we can easily follow. We should try to create something different on the website which will attract customers and can increase our revenue. Competition is very high in this modern generation. So we should m ake the difference to tolerate our competitors. We should ensure that the language is English as most of the customers across the globe can access the website. In this way a planned website can be created successfully with all the latest features. Analysis, including descriptions of the requirements or projected features of the Web site by highlighting integration issues The analysis phase describes all the possible necessities of this website in order to develop it. Requirements are basically the collection of functionalities as well as constraints which the end-user must expect from the site and as alibaba.com has both buyers and suppliers as the customer, it really need a well designed integration of selling and busying over the secured mode. These requirements are collected from the customer by means of discussion. It is really very important to take customers suggestion as end of the day our goal is to satisfy our customers. We should be able to analyze what is the problem, where are we lagging behind, what are the improvements to be made, etc. In this way, many things can be sorted. Analyzing the current situation and working accordingly will help in overcoming the barriers. We should be capable to analyze the situation. These requirements are examined in order to check the validity as well as the possibility of incorporating them in the system which is to be developed. At last, a document providing requirement specification is developed that will serve the intention of guiding principle for the forthcoming phases of model. This website has been designed on the basis of waterfall model under the processes of System Development Life Cycle. The requirement specifications which are included for the purpose of development of website are: proficiency in copy writing, conventional graphics, high-resolution images, consultation regarding website architecture, reasonable web hosting along with the service of active 24X7 customer supports for the domains, domain registration, hosting as well as other services. This site also requires various development services including ordinary B2C functionalities, such as e-commerce solutions as well as video integration. More features like online catalogs, integrated convincing client demonstrational videos or testimonial videos, and many others, can appeal visitors to view and trade through this website. Local Search as well as Ranking Services may also assist in dominating the presence of local market. This site will also offer various other services like pay-per click services in support of Google Adwords, MSN advertisement Center and Yahoo Search promotion, consulting advertising over the internet, in addition to entire program management in order to get the majority for the budget. Diagram1: Project Management technique While every project has different set of requirements as well as challenges as per the project specification, there are several milestones and considerations, which are common in every project. In broader perspective, a 5 stage strategy is developed. These phases comprise of all the necessary phases of a Software Development Life Cycle or in short, called SDLC model. Requirement Analysis: Before start functioning on the project, an in-depth study of users requirements is needed to make the base or foundation of the website. Hence, this will assist in suggesting one of the best clarifications suiting the current requirements. Design: next phase is design phase which basically starts as soon as the project kicks-off. This phase describes the designs for the front-end along with robust and scalable application structure which includes the database design. This phase is one of the critical phases in the project since; entire application is going to be formed based on this framework. Development: As soon as the design is confirmed, reviewed as well as approved in the design phase, now the next stage is the development stage where application development starts utilizing the suitable programming languages based on the requirement of project. Various type of testing is done in this phase, such as unit testing, system testing as well as integration testing at various milestones of this B2C and B2B website development project in order to make sure an error free delivery to the end user. Devotion to various programming in addition to testing standards is stringently followed to make sure the quality of the code and performance. Implementation Support: Subsequent to the development phase where various coding and testing is completed, the next stage is the implementation and support stage. Here, the recently developed application is installed in the real server environment to check whether it is working as per the strategy or not. Hence, now, the application goes live. In this stage, support is also provided in order to keep the application forever on the go. Maintenance Promotion: The last stage is maintenance and promotion. As soon as any application goes alive, updates are necessary. It helps the application to get restructured as per the need of latest environment. Hence, any and all of these updates are accomplished as a component of maintenance work. Various marketing campaigns over the internet are also done in order to enhance the visibility of the business over the internet. Project initiation, management and control scenarios, including overall planning and role assignment to each member To initiate a project of alibaba.com, its really required to move on with several careful planning along with projecting. Initially, this business can reduce the cost; however, it will improve the situation, later on. Following are the five most important control scenarios, which this website has taken in consideration while designing it. First feature or scenario is its reliable hosting which comprises of more than 99.99% uptime. Second feature is its user-friendly appearance as well as feel. This appealing appearance is brought with the help of various professional designs or softwares having template storefront. Third attractive scenario is a gateway for secure payment, incorporated with the feature of shopping cart. Payment transaction is mandatory to be secured and encrypted; otherwise, no user will try this site. Fourth scenario of this website is to generate a merchant account. This account will help in accepting multiple mode of payment as different users can use different mode of payment in order to trade. Fifth most important feature is to store the contact information of the customer in order to smooth the progress of customer service as well as privacy policy. Locating a Niche Market in the world of Online Retail A lot of entrepreneurs, in todays time, already have a thought of what they want and are capable of selling over the internet. On the other hand, few of the entrepreneurs still do not know what to sell, however, are familiar with the opportunity and hence, are involved in the planning of initializing a retail business based on e-commerce. The preliminary phase of business planning is basically an opportunity in order to investigate numerous markets in addition to making sensible and realistic decision on which products or else, services are offering the maximum earning potential. A niche is really important while planning for a online retail as if you dont know what to sell and how to sell, then its not possible to sell products and services properly and run business. Hence, its really important to think about all the expenses linked with the product, together with its storage, import taxes, shipping or packaging, in order to obtain a practical projection of the expenditure of selling it. Projecting Sales, Costs and Profits in B2C E-Commerce Business Planning Financial projections play a very important role on the planning for business. However, this is also true that it is really impossible to enlighten at the planning phase how well the business will be going to perform. Still, market as well as competition research work as a support and permit entrepreneurs to formulate educated guesses that include various tools like, graphs or charts in this phase of business planning. Diagram 2: Detail Project Analysis with the help of graphs and charts This course of action is really very important. As, in todays world, B2C e-commerce companies like www.alibaba.com launch themselves very quickly over the internet, hence proper research and plan acts are really important to be performed as they work as an authenticity check. A lot of time it happens that a idea which seems one of the best idea from the theory perspective, does not make logic in the live, real environment, hence, its best to have few alternatives so that one can move on to the subsequent possible product. This alternative is basically sinking money into a failed business. Its a ray of hope to a dead business. Design Detailed feature of www.alibaba.com Design phase is the subsequent phase after the analysis phase in the system development life cycle model. Unlike analysis phase, where what needs to be done is decided, this phase implements the strategies of analysis phase and design the frame work of the website as shown below: Diagram 3: Screenshot of www.alibaba.com Diagram 4: Screen shot of www.alibaba.com The website of www.alibaba.com is very user friendly. Few of the common testing are integration testing, Scalability testing, Stress testing, resolution testing, load testing as well as cross-browser compatibility testing. Testing is a broader term which basically divided into two parts: automated testing and manual testing. Both of these testing can be performed without any failure. For instance, its really essential to test the speed of uploading of graphics, in order to calculate this loading time, as they plays a very important role in the appearance of any website. In todays time, there are a lot of testing tools available over the internet which assist testers to test the web applications. After complete of all the short step-by-step testing, a final testing is necessary. This testing will be done in a live environment. William Blake Essay -- Biography William Blake Papers
William Blake William Blake was born in 1757 during a time when Romanticism was on the rise. Romantic poets of this day and age, living in England, experienced changes from a wealth-centered aristocracy to a modern industrial nation where power shifted to large-scale employers thus leading to the enlargement of the working class. Although Blake is seen as a very skillful writer his greatest successes were his engravings taught to him by a skilled sculpture. Blake differed from other poets in that he never received a formal education. His only education consisted of the arts, and therefore he enrolled in the Royal Academy of the Arts around the age of twelve. It was only in his spare time that he showed any interest in poetry. At the age of twenty-four he married Catherine Boucher who in fact had been illiterate at the time but Blake soon taught her to read. From there he pursued teaching in drawing and painting, illustrated books, and engraved designs made by other artists. It was only after many failures at the attempt of public recognition, and after years of isolation, that Blake had experienced his first audience. It was a small group of painters that admired his works and listened to every one of his talks. Blake is best known for intertwining his artistic talent and poetic flow. Proof of such success is seen in "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience", in which almost every poem has been engraved and beautifully sculpted onto a plaque. These two sets of poems represented what Blake believed to be the "two contrary states of the human soul". Blake was considered a social critic of his own time and often thought of himself as a prophet. His criticism was a reflection of his own country and of an era in time that... ...rth to awake, he is asking not to physically wake up but to really open your eyes to the world around you and see what you have become. Diversity of Online Communities Essay -- Technology Internet Games Ess
Diversity of Online Communities The article in U.S. News & World Report called "Go Play-On the Web" represents a community of virtual gamers on the Internet. These games are a lot more complex than the online gaming of the past. When these people that belong to this particular community log on to the net they are interacting with each other in huge 3-D virtual worlds. Some of these games focus on a particular subject like playing virtual game shows with others on the net. Some of the new games that are just recently being released are far more complex. One of these new more complex games is called "Motor City Online". Motor City Online is a game where people buy old muscle cars and customize them to their own personal specifications. When they are ready they can go out to the virtual races and race other people that are logged on to the game. Although most people like to race cars what makes this game unique is the fact that people can do a lot more in this game than just race cars. Some people spend their time bro wsing the car actions and buying cars cheap, then they strip the cars down in order to sell the parts to other people online and make a profit. Other people find a niche in the game as a mechanic helping others find the best and cheapest parts for their street rods. These are just a few of the roles that a person can play in this game. I think the fact that you can assume so many different roles in games like Motor City Online makes it unique. To me these types of games seem to be more than just games but they are almost a virtual life that some people live in the spare time. When they log on to these games they are taking positions in jobs in these worlds such as Race car drivers, Mechanics, Promoters, and Auctione... ...of the Internet say that the net is a dangerous place for people to spend their time because there are so many horrible people and things that users can be exposed to on the net. I don't agree with this at all I think that the Internet is very similar to real life. The Internet can be what ever each individual user wants it to be. It all depends on what communities that people chose to go online and be apart of. It takes a lot longer to find a community online than it does in real life but there is a community online for everyone. I think the critics of the Internet just haven't spent enough time browsing for a place where they feel comfortable. Works Cited Reingold, Howard "The Heart of the WELL" Composing Cyberspace Ed. Bolster Electronics: Dealing With Dealer Demands
Northern Alberta, the oil sands development area surrounding Fort McMurray, is the fastest growing economic area in Canada for several years. Obviously Bolsterââ¬â¢s total market share in this area was the highest with one third of the total market share it held national wide. Vickers based in Edmonton, Alberta covered 50% of the local market share and 75% of servicing in that area in spite having a national distributor, National Electronics (National). Also local firms preferred to do business with Vickers than National which has their nearest warehouse in Calgary, Sothern Alberta around 750 Km from Fort McMurray. (Exhibit 1) Neither Bolster nor National had a video system design team in northern Alberta.Since one third of the total market share is concentrated in northern Alberta, it is imperative to have a system design team there. If not it leads to a huge potential loss because there are competitions among the top 4 players who have 15% of the market share each. The managemen t tried to convince National to work in northern Alberta in 2007 but it went vain. At the same time Vickers was well established in northern Alberta, its main office, warehouse and engineering team are in Edmonton with a warehouse and sales team in the proposed oil sands area of Fort McMurray which is a six hours drive from Edmonton.Vickers is in the business for the past 20 years and their salespersons were highly trained and serviced the northern Alberta more effectively than national distributors. This is what the customer exactly wants in terms of good track record and service support in addition to lowest price. They also proved as an effective dealer by taking responsibility of warehouse, inventory storage, engineering expertise and services, relationship with local dealers and end-users, and increasing the Bolsterââ¬â¢s business in their area. Hence they requested Bolster a better pricing discount and wanted to be named as distributor. However the major concern for the mana gement is that if a local dealer was given a distributorship it may deteriorate relationship with their national distributors as it does in 2004 when Albright Industries was given a distributorship in order to make up theshortfall of 7% drop in market share and to provide growth in Quebec. Fortunately, last time Nationalââ¬â¢s dissatisfaction disappeared in a long run since they are not competing for the same market.National doesnââ¬â¢t take any leap in past 5 years in doing business in northern Alberta though it was informed about the huge potential of increasing market share. It seems National is not interested in increasing his presence in northern Alberta. Because of technological advancement and increased competition from three other major players it was difficult for Bolster to maintain an overall gross margin of 40% of factory price. In the current scenario if Bolster gives a distributorship to Vickers, it will further affect the financial stability of the company.Thoug h it has a potential to increasing the market share over 90%, if they got distributorââ¬â¢s discount. It will also change the entire distribution channel (a network through which goods moves from the manufacturer to end-users). The distribution cost of each channel plays a major role in selecting the options (Financial Analysis if possible) Customer service is a major issue since industrial video equipment are normally used in harsh environments. So the distributors or dealers should work faster if there was a production stoppage because of the failure of the video equipment for end-users. Since Bolster is more focused on technological development the responsibility lies with the distributors and the dealers. Though Vickers doubled its trained sales team to four, it is not enough to manage the vast area if it was given a distributorship. Even hiring a sales team seems difficult since compensation for the sales team was competitive in the industry.THE PROBLEM STATEMENTHow to handle the Vickersââ¬â¢ request of distributorship such that it has minimum negative consequences?OPTIONS1. Giving Territorial Distributorship to Vickers 2. Giving National Distributorship to Vickers 3. Leave it as a Territorial Dealership 4. Giving only Distributorââ¬â¢s Discount but not DistributorshipCRITERIA FOR EVALUATION1. Relationship with Distributors and Dealers 2. Financial Implications 3. Market Share 4. Customer Satisfaction (Services)EVALUATION OF OPTIONSOption 1: Giving Territorial Distributorship to Vickers If Vickers and National didnââ¬â¢t compete for the same market, then it will not create much dissatisfaction among the management, Vickers and National as it was in 2004, when Albright was given distributorship. If Vickers was given distributorship, Bolster has to give a price discount of 10% it will further deteriorate the financial positioning of Bolster. It is imperative to increase the market share in northern Alberta, since it has a potential of one third of the total market share. Since neither Bolster nor National have the presence in northern Alberta, it is wise to give a distributorship to Victors such that they can capture the 90% of the market share in there. It also helps to improve the customer services extended to the end users, since they have a presence.Option 2: Giving National Distributorship to Vickers If Vickers was given a National Distributorship, it will obviously deteriorate relationship with National because in a long run they are going to compete for the same market.
A Description of the Graduate Record Examination
GREG subject test is used by very few universities for granting admissions. Universities usually use [emailà protected] Subject Test for granting admission to the PhD program (sometimes for MS programs also) in Mathematics, Physics, Biological Sciences, English Literature, Psychology, Chemistry, etc. On the other hand, large number of universities do NOT use [emailà protected] Subject Test for granting admission to the PhD program in the above mentioned fields of studies. Formats of [emailà protected] : Two formats of [emailà protected] revised General test are available : The computer based & The Paper based.Paper based format is available n only a very few countries. In India, only Computer Based [emailà protected] is available. Who takes [emailà protected] & When ? : Engineers, Architects, Doctors, Dentists, Biotechnologist, Science graduates, Physiotherapist, Pharmacists, Management graduates & postgraduates (MBA), computer professionals (MAC), Mathematicians, Psychol ogists, etc. Planning to pursue Masters or PhD programs, etc. The list is long. Almost 90% of the people who take [emailà protected] are in their II or Ill or IV year of their college pursuing their degree in any stream such as Engineering or Science or Medicine, etc.Who accepts [emailà protected] & how is it used ? Thousands of universities across the globe, more specifically almost all the universities in the USA & several in Canada use [emailà protected] scores along with student's academic record in college, recommendation letters from Professors and/or employers, non-academic credentials such as projects, research papers, etc. To grant admission to their Masters or PhD programs. Several universities now also accept [emailà protected] scores in lieu of GMTA scores to offer admission in their MBA programs. When & Where can one take [emailà protected] ? : Unlike Indian college entrance tests such as GATE, CAT, etc. Imputer based [emailà protected] is administered throu ghout the year at arioso Promoters (wholly-owned subsidiary of TEST) centers in India as well as at additional test centers in various cities such as Iambi, Delhi, Opal, Metadata, Allahabad, Achaean, Hydrated, Surgeon, Bangor, Kilowatt, Pine, Fedora, etc. At Promoters centers [emailà protected] is conducted 3 times in a day, all weekdays & at additional centers on some selected days of the month. How many times can a student appear for [emailà protected] ? You can take the [emailà protected] once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously. If you take the paper-based GREG revised General Test, you can take it as often as it is offered. Are there any US universities, which do not use [emailà protected] scores ? There are several US universities, which do not require you to submit your [emailà protected] scores. The admissions committee of these universities primarily base their admission decision on college grades, recommendation letters, etc. But some of these universities use [emailà protected] scores to award financial aid in form of fellowships, Graduate assistantships, Teaching or Research assistantships, etc.Score validity [emailà protected] scores are valid Upton 5 years from the test date. How can I appear for [emailà protected] ? If you wish to take [emailà protected] you have to first make your account at HTTPS://emigre. Test. Org/ grew/login/login. ]SP. Then you can proceed to fix your examination date by following the instructions. Or driving license or Dear card, etc. Are unacceptable. Test centers are available in all major cities of India.[emailà protected] Test Fee The test Fee for computer based revised general [emailà protected] in Ind ia is IIS$195 at present. Remember that in this test fee you can also send [emailà protected] scores to four institutions (colleges/universities, etc. ) free of cost. If you decide later to apply to one or more of these 4 institutions, then you will not be required to pay IIS$27 per university to TEST to forward your [emailà protected] score to these institutions. How are the [emailà protected] scores reported to the universities ? Whenever you give your [emailà protected], you can view your scores after about 12-15 days from your test date in your online emigre account. You can also print your score-sheet from your emigre account. The universities do not use the photocopies of the [emailà protected] marks- whet and require the official scores to take admission decisions. To send official scores to a university, you have to go to your emigre account, where you will find your [emailà protected] scores displayed as per the dates on which you appeared for [emailà protected ] You can send all the scores to the universities or can use Corselets facility to send scores (by test date) of your choice by paying IIS$27 per university.Remember that in the test fee (about IIS$195 in India) of [emailà protected] you can send [emailà protected] scores to four institutions (colleges/universities, etc. ) free of cost. If you decide later to apply to one r more of these 4 institutions, then you will not be required to pay IIS$27 per university to TEST to forward your GREG score to these institutions. You have to choose the name of these institutions to which TEST will forward your [emailà protected] scores at the test center on your test date, immediately after finishing your [emailà protected] test. The complete list of the name of the countries, universities, departments will be displayed on your computer screen after you have viewed your score. If you do not use this free facility, you are losing IIS$108. Ask CHICHI for the name of these four institutions . When will oh get your [emailà protected] scores ? After completing the computer-based [emailà protected], you will be given the opportunity to Report or Cancel your scores. If you choose Report Scores, you will see your unofficial scores for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections displayed on your computer screen.Because of the Analytical Writing essay scoring process, you will not be able to view your Analytical Writing score at the testing center. If you cancel your scores, neither you nor any universities will ever see them and they will not be part of your reportable history. Your official scores will become available in our emigre account and sent to your score recipients approximately 10-15 days after your test date. Test Structure of GREG [emailà protected] consists of three major sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. In the first two sections, the test taker receives scores on scale of 130-170 in 1 point increment s (such as 150, 151 & so on) and receives scores on a scale of 0-6 in half point increments (such as 3. 0, 3. 5, 4. 0 & so on) on the Analytical Writing (AWE) section. Total score is on a scale of 260-340 (such as 300, 301 , 302 & so on) with AWE score stated on a scale of 6. 0. In addition, an unidentified unsecured subsection may be included and may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. It is not counted as part of the test taker's score. An identified research subsection that is not scored may be included in place of the unidentified, unsecured subsection. This research subsection will always appear at the end of the test. The overall testing time for the computer-based [emailà protected] revised General Test is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are in all 6 subsections with a 10-minute break after the completion of the third subsection. The Analytical Writing section will always appear iris. The Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and unidentified or the unsecured subsections may appear in any order. The test-taker must treat each section as if it counts towards his score. Adaptive nature of the test : As per the official site of [emailà protected] (mm. ââ¬Ë. Greg. Org) the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section- level adaptive, meaning that the first section of the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning measures spans a range of difficulty levels, from easy to difficult. The first section is assembled such that, overall, the first section is of average difficulty. The difficulty level of the second section of each of the measures depends on your performance on the first section. For example, if for the Quantitative Reasoning measure you do very well on the first section, the second section of the Quantitative Reasoning measure will be at a higher level of difficulty. The scoring for the Quantitative Reasoning measure takes into consideration the total number of questions answered correctly acro ss the two sections, as well as the difficulty level of the section (similar process for the Verbal Reasoning measure). How the computer based [emailà protected] is scored ? : The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning assures are section-level adaptive. This means the computer selects the second section of a measure based on the performance on the first section. Within each section, all questions contribute equally to the final score. For each of the two measures, a raw score is computed. The raw score is the number of questions answered correctly. The raw score is converted to a scaled score through a process known as equating. The equating process accounts for minor variations in difficulty among the different test editions as well as differences in difficulty among individuals' tests introduced by the section-level adaptation. Thus a given scaled score of a particular measure reflects the same level of performance regardless of which section was selected and when the test w as taken. For the Analytical Writing section of computer-based [emailà protected], each essay receives a score from at least one trained reader, using a six-point holistic scale. In holistic scoring, readers are trained to assign scores on the basis of the overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task. The essay score is then reviewed by [emailà protected], a computerized program developed by TEST, which is used to monitor the human reader. If the e-rater valuation and the human score agree, the human score is used as the final score. If they disagree by a certain amount, a second human score is obtained, and the final score is the average of the two human scores. The final scores on the two essays are then averaged and rounded to the nearest half-point interval on the 0-6 score scale. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing measure. The primary emphasis in scoring the Analytical Writing section is on your critical thinking and analytical writing skil ls rather than on grammar and mechanics. Structure of the Computer-based [emailà protected] revised General TestSection Number of Questions Allotted Time Analytical Writing (0-6 marks) (One section with two separately timed tasks) One ââ¬Å"Analyze an Issueâ⬠task and one ââ¬Å"Analyze an Argumentâ⬠task 30 minutes per task Verbal Reasoning (130-170 marks) (Two subsections) 20 questions per subsection 30 minutes per subsection Quantitative Reasoning (130-marks) 35 minutes per subsection Unsecured Varies Research Verbal Reasoning (Score ââ¬â 130-170 points (marks) The Verbal Reasoning section measures the ability of the test-taker to understand what one reads and how one applies his/her reasoning skills. The Verbal Reasoning section of the [emailà protected] consists of 3 types of questions : 1. Reading Comprehension. 2. Text Completion 3. Sentence Equivalence Reading Comprehension : The test-taker has to read the passage and then answer questions following the pas sage. Reading comprehension passages are drawn from physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, arts & humanities and everyday topics. They are based on articles found in books and periodicals, both academic and nonacademic. The lengths of these passages range from 1-5 paragraphs. The test contains approximately 10 passages; majority of which are one paragraph in length and only en or two of which are several paragraphs long. Typically, about half of the questions on the test will be based on passages, and the number of questions based on a given passage can range from one to six. There are three types of Reading Comprehension questions: Multiple-choice Questions -? Select One Answer Choice : These are the multiple- choice questions with 5 answer choices, out of which test-taker must select one.Multiple-choice Questions -? Select One or More Answer Choices : In these type of questions, there are 3 answer choices and one has to select all that are correct. The erect answe r to these types of questions could be that either one, two or all three of the answer choices may be correct. Suppose two choices are correct and the test- taker has selected only one. He/she will not get any marks for this selection. There are no marks given for partially correct answers.Select-in-passage : The question asks the test-taker to click on the sentence in the passage that meets a certain description. To answer this type of question, one has to choose one of the sentences in the passage and click on it to highlight it. Text Completion : Questions in this subsection are based on vocabulary. Text Completion questions include a passage composed of 1 to 5 sentences with 1 to 3 blanks. There are 3 answer choices per blank, or 5 answer choices if there is a single blank. There is a single correct answer, consisting of one choice for each blank. The test-taker receives no marks for partially correct answers. Sentence Equivalence : Questions in this subsection are based on vocab ulary. Sentence Equivalence questions consist of a single sentence with one blank and six answer choices. These questions require the test-taker to select two of the answer choices. One does not get any marks for partially correct answers. For more details about this section of [emailà protected] contact CHICHI or go to http://www. TTS. Org/Greg/revised_general/about/content/ quantitative_reasoning Quantitative Reasoning (Score ââ¬â 130-170 points (marks) The Quantitative Reasoning section of the [emailà protected] consists of four types of questions: Quantitative Comparison Questions Multiple-choice Questions -? Select one answer choice Multiple-choice Questions -? Select one or more answer choices Numeric Entry Questions Each question appears either independently as a separate single question or as part of a set of questions called a Data Interpretation set.All of the questions in a Data Interpretation set are based on the same data presented in tables, graphs or other dis plays of data. On-screen calculator is available. The Quantitative Reasoning section of [emailà protected] assesses the test-taker for basic mathematical skills, understanding of elementary mathematical concepts & ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods. The syllabus (though not limited to) includes : Arithmetic topics include properties and types of integers, such as divisibility, factorization, prime numbers, remainders and odd and even integers; arithmetic operations, exponents and roots; and concepts such as estimation, percent, ratio, rate, absolute value, the number line, decimal representation and sequences of numbers.Algebra topics include operations with exponents; factoring and simplifying algebraic expressions; relations, functions, equations and inequalities; solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; solving simultaneous equations and inequalities; setting up equations to solve word problems; and coordina te geometry, including graphs of functions, equations and inequalities, intercepts and slopes of lines.Geometry topics include parallel and perpendicular lines, circles, triangles -? including isosceles, equilateral and 300-600-900 triangles -? quadrilaterals, other polygons, congruent and similar figures, three-dimensional figures, area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem and angle measurement in degrees. The ability to construct proofs is not tested.Data analysis topics include basic descriptive statistics, such as mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, intrauterine range, quartiles and percentiles; interpretation of data in tables and graphs, such as line graphs, bar graphs, circle rapes, foxtrots, shatterproof and frequency distributions; elementary probability, such as probabilities of compound events and independent events; random variables and probability distributions, including normal distributions; and counting methods, such as combinations, permutations an d Venn diagrams.Inferential statistics is not included. The syllabus does not include trigonometry, calculus or other higher-level mathematics. For more details about this section of [emailà protected] contact CHICHI or go to http://www. Test. Org/Greg/revised_general/about/content/quantitative_reasoning Analytical Writing (Score ââ¬â 0-6 points (marks) The Analytical Writing measure consists of two separately timed writing tasks, which the test-taker has to type using a basic word processor software available on the screen while giving the test. The tasks are : One ââ¬Å"Analyze an Issueâ⬠task to be completed in 30 minutes One ââ¬Å"Analyze an Argumentâ⬠task to be completed in 30 minutes The Issue task presents an opinion on an ââ¬Å"issueâ⬠of general interest followed by specific instructions on how to respond to that issue. The test-taker is required to evaluate this ââ¬Å"issueâ⬠and write an essay by taking a position and give examples to support his/her views. The Argument task requires the test-taker to evaluate a given argument according to specific instructions. The test-taker will need to consider the logical soundness of the argument by assessing its claims and evaluating the evidence it provides rather than agree or disagree with the position it presents. Individuals taking the computer-based test will use a basic word processor developed by TEST. The basic word processor contains the following functionalities: insert text, delete text, cut-and-paste and undo the previous action. Tools such as a spell checker and grammar checker are not available in the TEST software.Complete sit of ââ¬Å"Issueâ⬠& ââ¬Å"Argumentâ⬠topics, out of which one ââ¬Å"Issueâ⬠& one ââ¬Å"Argumentâ⬠will appear in the actual test as the two writing tasks are given at http://www. Test. Org/Greg/ revised_general/prepare/analytical_writing/issue/pool and http://www. Test. Org/Greg/ revised_general/prepare/analytical_writ ing/argument/pool Prepare for [emailà protected] It is not very difficult to score high on computer based [emailà protected] revised General test. The first step to score high on [emailà protected] or even on similar tests such as the SAT or GMTA is to plan the whole preparation for the test.Planning includes answers to various questions such as (1) When to start the preparation for [emailà protected] ? 2) How to prepare ? (3) Time duration the student will spend on preparing the individual sections, on learning & understanding the vocabulary, on giving practice tests, (4) How many times should the student give [emailà protected] (actual test) ? , etc. It is important to make a Time Table so that one's preparation is structured and focused. When to Start preparation for [emailà protected] ? Usually majority of the students Join CHICHI [emailà protected] coaching classes in their II or I year of their Bachelor degree. Some Join in Ill or IV year with a few Joining after the completion of their Bachelor/Masters degree or when they are working full-time. Starting early is the key to success. If you concentrate on GREG in your Ill or IV year, then you will be left with no time to do all the things (such as projects, working on papers, etc. ) required to obtain admission and financial support in a top ranked universities. So, try to give [emailà protected] by the end of your first year or latest by the end of second year, when the academic load is less, so that later, you can concentrate on your studies.Getting [emailà protected] score early also allows you to consider other options too, such as campus placement, MBA entrance or even appearing for Subject [emailà protected] or GATE. Several companies use Aptitude Test similar to GREG for campus recruitment. If you have prepared well for [emailà protected], you can perform very well in these tests as the syllabus of these examinations matches a lot with the syllabus of [emailà protected] Ideal ly you should start preparation, on your own, by contacting CHICHI in first year of your degree.CHICHI will guide you, what you should do at home besides the regular college work so that when you Join the coaching class for [emailà protected] at CHICHI after I or II year examinations, you will be well prepared to more actively participate in class discussions. To understand when to start preparation of [emailà protected] & when to write the est. first time, one must understand how the universities admission process works. The academic year in the universities in the USA (as well as in other countries such as Canada, Australia, UK) starts between Gag. 15 to Septet. 15 (unlike India, where it starts from July).Different universities have different start date of their academic session. Usually the admission process starts about 10 months before the actual start date. So, a student who wants admission in August 201 5 (also called as Fall semester/ quarter) will start application pro cess to apply for admission in from November 2014. For applying to any university, the student has to complete and then submit an online application for admission to the university. The application deadline dates of universities vary a lot. Some universities will have admission deadline dates as early as Novo. And some will have as late as July 1. But usually most of the universities have DCE. 1 to Jan. 15 as their admission and financial aid (scholarship) deadline dates. So, a student wishing to obtain admission in a university starting from Fall 201 5 session should try to get best [emailà protected] scores (assuming that the student gives the test twice) before Cot. 014 & latest by DCE. 2014. How much time does it take for the student to prepare for [emailà protected] ? The time duration to prepare for [emailà protected] varies from student to student but usually it takes about 3-4 months to prepare for [emailà protected] along with college studies. Some students take long er and some are able to prepare for [emailà protected] in duration of 4-6 weeks also. How to prepare for [emailà protected] ? CHICHI has been conducting [emailà protected] coaching classes for more than 19 years. Several students in past years have secured scores of 2320+ out of 2400 (previous pattern), 1 550 (old pattern) out of 1600, to 334 (the new computer based revised general [emailà protected]) out of a total score of 340 leading them to obtain admissions & scholarships in top-ranked US/Canadian universities.
